5 Things to Look for in Clothes for Sensitive Newborn Skin

Because soft skin deserves thoughtful choices.

Newborn skin is incredible—soft, delicate, and impossibly tiny. It’s also surprisingly sensitive.
Many babies experience dryness, irritation, or redness during those early weeks. Sometimes it’s from laundry detergent, sometimes it’s from fabrics that rub the wrong way. And sometimes, it’s just because their skin is still figuring out the world.

As parents, we can’t control everything. But we can choose clothes that help—not hurt.

Here are five things to look for when dressing your little one in those early, extra-sensitive days.

1. Choose Soft, Breathable Fabrics (and Then Feel Them Again)

The tag might say “cotton,” but not all cottons feel the same. For newborns, you want fabrics that feel soft even before the first wash. A cotton blend with just a hint of stretch often feels smoother than rigid 100% cotton, and it moves better with your baby’s body.

Hold the fabric between your fingers. If it feels rough to you, it’s definitely too rough for them.

2. Check the Seams (Yes, Really)

We often focus on the outside of the outfit, but the inside is where your baby feels everything. Thick seams, scratchy thread, or tags placed in the wrong spot can irritate delicate skin fast.

Look for flat seams, tagless designs, or labels printed directly onto the fabric. They may not seem like a big deal—but trust us, they are.

3. Look for a Gentle, Stretchy Fit

Too-tight sleeves or necklines can cause friction where baby’s skin folds—especially around the neck, under the arms, and at the thighs. A little stretch in the fabric helps prevent this and makes dressing quicker (which your baby will thank you for later).

Avoid anything that feels rigid or too snug. Baby clothes should feel easy—on them and on you.

4. Go Easy on Embellishments

Ruffles, appliqués, buttons, bows—they’re cute, sure. But sometimes they come with stiff linings or extra stitching that irritates the skin underneath. If a detail is rough on the inside or likely to rub, it might be better saved for special occasions.

When in doubt, choose simple designs with thoughtful, gentle finishes.

5. Washability Matters (A Lot)

You’ll be washing baby clothes a lot. Look for pieces that hold their softness after multiple cycles. Some fabrics feel okay at first, then get stiff or scratchy over time. Bonus points for items that can handle warm washes without shrinking or losing shape.

And remember—sometimes the softest fabric means nothing if it comes with a “hand wash only” label.

At Jokul, every fabric, seam, and neckline is chosen with babies’ skin in mind. Because we believe your baby shouldn’t have to “get used to” an outfit. It should feel right from the start.

Their skin is soft. Their clothes should be softer.
