How Many Baby Clothes Do You Really Need?
Let’s talk about what you actually reach for—day in, day out.
If you’ve ever stood in front of a drawer full of adorable baby clothes and still felt like your baby had “nothing to wear,” you’re not alone. It’s easy to end up with too many of the wrong things—and not enough of the ones you really need.
Newborns go through outfit changes faster than you think. Between diaper leaks, spit-ups, and surprise messes, having backup outfits (and backups for the backups) can be a lifesaver.
But that doesn’t mean you need to buy every cute piece you see.
So… how much is enough? Let’s break it down.
First, a quick note on laundry
How often you do laundry makes a big difference.
If you wash every day or every other day, you can get by with fewer outfits. If laundry only happens twice a week, you’ll want a bit more wiggle room—especially with things like bodysuits and pajamas.
A realistic starter list for newborns (0–3 months):
-
8–10 short-sleeve bodysuits
For daytime wear, layering, or just lounging. They’re your MVPs. -
4–6-footed sleepers or rompers
Comfy for bedtime or anytime, especially ones with zippers or easy snaps. -
4–6 pairs of pants or leggings
Soft, stretchy, and easy to match with anything. -
2–3 soft hats
For newborn warmth or sun protection (depending on the season). -
4–5 pairs of socks or booties
These will somehow disappear constantly. Have backups. -
2–3 “nice” outfits
Think of something you’d put the baby in for a visit, photos, or a special moment. -
1–2 cardigans or light layers
Helpful for unpredictable weather or air-conditioned spaces. -
Optional: 1–2 sleep sacks or wearable blankets
Depending on how your baby sleeps.
But don’t forget: babies grow fast
The trick isn’t to overstock one size—it’s to stay a little ahead.
Babies usually grow out of newborn sizes in just a few weeks. So it’s smart to have some 0–3 month and even 3–6 month pieces on hand early, especially if you’re gifted lots of newborn clothes.
Pro tip: if something looks small now, it’ll be too small in two weeks.
So how much do you really need?
Enough to get through a few outfit changes a day without doing laundry constantly. Enough to keep baby comfortable. And most importantly—enough of the right clothes: the soft, simple, go-to kind you reach for again and again.
At Jokul, we design baby clothes with real life in mind.
Pieces that aren’t just cute but comfy, washable, and practical. The kind that fill your top drawer, not the back of the closet.
Because what babies wear every day should feel as thoughtful as the moments they grow up in.
